Rungvisai-Estrada Confirmed for Feb. 24
Details of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai’s second defense of the WBC Super Flyweight Title have been finalized — he will defend against mandatory challenger Juan Francisco Estrada on Feb. 24 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Both men last competed in September on the same card at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In the main event of that card, Rungvisai faced off with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in a rematch from their first encounter back in March — when Rungvisai knocked down Chocolatito for the first time in his career and upset him to win the WBC title by majority decision. In this rematch, Rungvisai improved upon last time and managed to knock Chocolatito out in the fourth round.
Estrada, meanwhile, defeated Carlos Cuadras by unanimous decision. Despite Cuadras controlling the first half of the fight, Estrada took over in the second, even dropping Cuadras to the canvas in the 11th round. In the end, Estrada won but ring announcer Michael Buffer incorrectly — but quite humorously — announced Cuadras as the winner before correcting himself.
The WBC then ordered for Rungvisai-Estrada to occur. This could be another fight card with a lot of super flyweight action like last time, early rumors say.
Chocolatito, however, will not be a part of this card. Boxing Scene confirms Chocolatito is back in the gym, but he will return at another point in early 2018.
