Sadam Ali To Make First Defense In May

After his career making victory over Miguel Cotto in December of 2017, Sadam Ali will make the first defense of his WBO super welterweight title.

As reported by World Boxing News, Ali, who is under the Golden Boy Promotions banner will defend his title against Liam Smith, who once held the title before losing it to Canelo Alvarez in 2016.

According to Smith’s promoter Frank Warren, the two sides have agreed to terms, and it looks like Smith will return to the United States and face Ali in his hometown.

“The fight’s going to be on some time in May. Looks like it’s going to be New York, just waiting for them to confirm the date.

“It’s all done, and hopefully he can reclaim his title. It’s a fight that I think he can win.”

Warren, on the BoxNation podcast explained that his experience in dealing with the spotlight of fighting Canelo Alvarez will serve him well against the bright lights of New York City.

“He fought Canelo in Dallas (with) 50-odd thousand people. He handled that so well that week. There won’t be a question of him melting on the night,” he said.
