Sadam Ali vs. Liam Smith Postponed

Liam Smith has withdrawn from his May 12 fight against Sadam Ali for the WBO super welterweight title after Smith suffered an illness and will not compete.

Smith cited the illness as the reason he has not been able to train for more than a week and believes he will not be properly prepared in time to face Ali. Ali vs. Smith was going to take place at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York where Smith would attempt to win back the title he lost when he was defeated by Canelo Alvarez in 2016.

“I’m bitterly disappointed that I have been forced to postpone my fight with Sadam Ali to a later date. A recent illness has severely impacted on my training schedule, leaving me with no choice but to postponed the May 12th date,” Smith said in a statement.

“I’ve been out of training for eight days. We’re not sure exactly what was wrong with me but it appears to be some sort of allergic reaction. I’m not injured and I’m hoping that the fight can be rescheduled quickly.”

Further details on a rescheduled date for Ali vs. Smith will be announced in the coming weeks.
