Shields-Hammer Potentially Cancelled

Claressa Shields has wanted a fight with Christina Hammer for over a year, and now her middleweight championship showdown seems to be put on pause.

Shields took to Twitter on Monday to reveal that Hammer has been sidelined with an illness that would not only keep her out of the ring for their November 17th fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but out until the spring of 2019.

“Very, very, very disappointed,” Shields began during her multi-tweet venting. “I’ll let my team do the announcement! But what I will say is … I want this fight 100%. I am not the one sick. [I don’t know] the ins and outs of Hammer’s condition, but she can’t box [until] March the doctor says. I’m still going to fight the 17th of [November].”

Shields was looking to unify her IBF and WBA titles with the WBC and WBO titles held by Hammer, as both undefeated fighters have been squaring off in what was the biggest fight to be made in women’s boxing.
