Shields Nominated For Sportswoman Of The Year
Current world champion and former Olympic gold medalist, Claressa Shields, joins a list of 15 other Team USA athletes to be nominated by the Women’s Sports Foundation for Sportswoman of the Year.
Joining Shields as nominees are three-time Olympic medalist Mikaela Shiffrin, Hannah Roberts an Olympic hopeful in BMX Park, Oksana Masters, Brenna Huckaby, Chloe Kim, Simone Manuel, and Shalane Flanagan.
Coming off a decorated amateur career, which featured Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016, Shields looked to become the biggest star in female boxing. In her initial six professional fights, Shields has unified titles at super middleweight and middleweight, and now looks to become undisputed middleweight champion against German star, Christina Hammer.
An American woman has won the past six individual Sportswoman of the Year Awards, and every team award since 1993. The winners will be announced at the 39th Annual Salute to Women in Sports ceremony in New York City on Oct. 17.
