Spence Is First Choice For Mikey Garcia
Even though the IBF wants their lightweight champion to defend his belt against Richard Commey, Mikey Garcia is looking to move up and take the IBF’s welterweight title from Errol Spence.
“I hope to get Spence, he’s my first choice, Spence also has an interest in fighting me. If he did not have that interest or he would have told me no from the beginning, then I would make the defense with Commey, but Spence says that he’s interested in fighting with me and I’m trying to secure that fight,” Garcia told ESPN Deportes.
Garcia looks to defeat Spence and add his name to the list of other five division world champions, holding gold at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, and junior welterweight.
“I know it is a very big challenge,” Garcia said of fighting the stronger Spence,
“but it would also be an achievement. It would be the biggest victory of my career, so I hope to make this fight and get the victory.”
“Something that motivates me in this fight is to win another championship in another division and against another undefeated opponent, it would be my third undefeated champion that I would face consecutively and in a different division. First, I won the super lightweight championship against Sergey Lipinets, and then we unified with Easter in lightweight and now Spence. If everything can be done in less than 12 months I think it would be impressive.”
Garcia and Spence were floated for a potential showdown in December on Showtime PPV, but with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder confirmed for December 1st, if the undefeated fighters do square off, it’ll be in the first quarter of 2019.
