Swanson Gets Decision, Wants Title Shot
Cub Swanson made it a point to prove why he belongs at the top of the UFC’s featherweight division.
He hopes to get a shot at the winner of the Max Holloway vs. Jose Aldo bout, and his wish is the unanimous decision win over Artem Lobov in the main event of Saturday night’s UFC Fight Night event proves his worth of a title shot.
The two feel each other out at the start of the opening round. Head kick attempt by Swanson is blocked before the two clinch up. Lobov gets Swanson to the cage wall and earns the first takedown of the fight. Swanson eventually gets out and the two move back to the center of the cage, trading shots. Lobov attempts to catch a kick from Swanson. Swanson continued to throw out his head after each punch he threw. Lobov gets stunned briefly from a right hand, but he answers with a left. The two trade more blows in the center of the Octagon. Body shot by Lobov, and a hook to the head missed. The two continue to exchange punches and blocks, but Swanson manages to land a head kick before the bell.
The two exchange again at the start of the second, with Swanson landing a kick. Lobov gets in a few key counter shots. Both men lock into a clinch and trade knees. Lobov attempts a trip, but he can’t get it. More punches and knees thrown. Swanson is able to get Lobov down and lands several punches and elbows. Lobov gives up his back, and Swanson attempts the choke, but he is ultimately unsuccessful.
Both guys landed well to start off the third round. A left hook from Swanson. Swanson landed a few shots and smiles; he definitely looked to be in his comfort zone. Then, more exchanging in the middle of the Octagon. Lobov attempted to keep the fight in the center, standing, to take away Swanson’s takedowns and reach power. Lobov got out of a clinch, but ate a hard hook. Swanson lands a few power punches, rocking Lobov and busting him open around his eye. Swanson continues on the attack, and Lobov is rocked against the cage. Lobov reaches for a few shots, but referee Herb Dean calls time to look at the cut on Lobov’s left eye. Lobov is cleared by the doctor and the fight resumes.
Right hand and a straight from Swanson, as Lobov seemed a bit rocked again. Meanwhile, Swanson looked more fresh and in a groove. Lobov can’t seem to shake off the cobwebs late in the third, as Swanson throws out the kicks. A straight right to the jaw from Swanson and throws a cartwheel kick. Lobov gets in a late takedown before the end of the third.
Lobov manages to get Swanson in a clinch to the cage wall early on in the fourth. Lobov looked to move forward and apply pressure, and he manages to land in a few shots. The two tangle in the center of the Octagon. Both look to get a takedown, but Swanson lands a spinning back elbow from seemingly nowhere! Both men have some more exchanging in the middle of the Octagon. Lobov attempts a takedown, but Swanson telegraphs it. Swanson lands a key counterpunch and right hand. It seemed clear Swanson was in control at the end of four rounds.
Sportsmanship bows from both men to start off the final round. Swanson slips a bit early on in the round, and Lobov locks him up in a clinch. Swanson manages to turn it around and get Lobov’s back to the cage wall. The two break and return to the middle of the Octagon. Some more exchanging for about the next minute before Lobov attempts another takedown, which is easily defended by Swanson. Lobov gets Swanson’s back to the cage once again, but Swanson eventually gets out of it. A hard left kick from Swanson. Knee to the stomach by Lobov. Swanson gets a takedown late in the round and takes mount. Swanson gets Lobov’s back with 20 seconds left, but the two get back to their feet. Both men throw wildly to close out the fight.
Swanson earned the unanimous decision win, taking the fight 49-46 on two judges’ scorecards, while winning all five rounds on the third judge’s card.
