The Friday Five: August 18th, 2017

 

1.  Brock Lesnar teases a return to the UFC: This past Monday night, former UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar’s advocate, Paul Heyman claimed that the WWE Universal Champion. With UFC Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones making it known he wants to fight the current pro wrestler, this past Monday just added more fuel to that fire.

2. Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor Media Days: With just over a week until two of the biggest names in combat sports face off, both Mayweather and McGregor addressed the media leaving some big numbers and big predictions on the table.McGregor on being in a twelve round fight:

“I don’t see him absorbing the blows from the first two rounds.”

“I am ready to go all twelve rounds or taking him out in ten seconds.”

Mayweather on the risk of fighting McGregor.

“I truly believe I am taking the bigger risk…I have the 49-0 record. When a fighter has been dominating for 20-some years and never lost, everything is on the line. My legacy, my boxing record. Everything is on the line.”

3. GGG/Canelo the biggest Middleweight fight ever?: During a media conference call for next month’s Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez fight in Las Vegas,  Abel Sanchez the trainer of 34 year old Golovkin claimed that the fight will be on-par with the fights of the “Four Kings” of boxing ( Ray Leonard,  Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, and Roberto Duran.) This lines up with what Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya claimed on a media call last week, saying this will be the greatest middleweight fight of all time.

 

 

4. Frank Mir Signs With Bellator: After speculation and rumors, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir announced that he has signed with Bellator MMA. With Mir wanting a rematch with Brock Lesnar and a fight with Fedor Emelianenko, his deal with Bellator as explained on his Phone Booth Fighting podcast allows him to fight outside Bellator with the organization having a first right of refusal

5. Mikey Garcia wants Manny Pacquiao: Famous trainer Freddie Roach was asked about the future of 38 year old Manny Pacquiao after his rematch with Joe Horn. Roach not one to shirk away from making news claimed that there was another fighter who wanted to face off against the Filipino star.

“Mikey Garcia came here [to the Wild Card Boxing Club] and asked if we’d fight him – I’d love to see that fight.”

Whether or not it will happen is unknown, but it would be a feather in the cap for Garcia who is coming off a big win over Adrian Broner in Brooklyn.
