Thompson vs. Masvidal Official for UFC 217

About three months ago, a challenge was issued. Now, the bout is official. Former welterweight title challenge Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will face Jorge Masvidal in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4 at UFC 217.

Masvidal hinted at the bout in a tweet on Thursday. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani later confirmed the bout is on.

After going 13-1 in his professional MMA career, Thompson earned a shot at the UFC welterweight title against Tyron Woodley at UFC 205, the first UFC event in New York City last November. The bout went to a majority draw, and the two battled again at UFC 209. In a title rematch less than stellar compared to their first bout, Woodley retained the title by decision.

Masvidal, meanwhile, last competed at UFC 211 back in May, losing a split decision to Demian Maia. This snapped a three-fight win streak that saw Masvidal defeat the likes of Donald Cerrone, Jake Ellenberger and Ross Pearson.

UFC 217 is expected to be headlined by Georges St-Pierre’s return to the UFC after a four-year hiatus. He’ll fight Michael Bisping for the UFC Middleweight Championship. It will also feature Cody Garbrandt’s first defense of the UFC Bantamweight Championship, as he defends against TJ Dillashaw.
