Geogres St-Pierre is back, and he’s still making history.
St-Pierre defeated Michael Bisping to win the UFC Middleweight Title in the main event of UFC 217, which took place from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
With this win, GSP became only the fourth fighter in UFC history to win a world title in two different weight classes, joining an elite club that includes B.J. Penn, Randy Couture and Conor McGregor.
“It is a dream come true,” GSP said after the bout. “I don’t have the words.”
But GSP was not the only one celebrating winning gold at this event, as UFC 217 became the only event ever in the promotion’s 24-year history to feature three new champions. In addition to GSP, T.J. Dillashaw regained the UFC Bantamweight Title with a win over Cody Garbrandt, and Rose Namajunas became the first woman to finish and defeat Joanna Jedrzejczyk and won the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship.
Bisping vs. GSP:
Bisping and GSP both landed their fair share of punches early on in the opening round of their bout. GSP seemed to want to take control of the bout, and while it did seem he was in control of the pacing, Bisping made him pay with counter-striking. With about a minute left, GSP got a takedown in on Bisping, putting Bisping against the cage. GSP then ended the first with a superman jab.
Round two saw GSP delivering a mix of jabs and kicks, but he ate a big right hand from Bisping. Bisping, however, missed what could have been a key uppercut and a counter-punch from GSP brought the match’s pace back down. GSP got another takedown in on the champion, but Bisping was able to get back up and made the returning legend eat a number of shots to close out the second.
GSP got a takedown in early in the round this time, but while he initiated the takedown and was working in top position, Bisping seemed to be doing more of the damage from the bottom. GSP focused more on position control rather than ground-and-pound, and he ended up getting bloodied for it. As the two got back into the standing game, GSP landed a side kick and a hard left hand, sending the champion to the mat. In full guard, GSP landed a number of elbows on Bisping before locking in a rear-naked choke, putting Bisping out and winning the championship.
Garbrandt vs. Dillashaw:
The title bout between Dillashaw and Garbrandt saw a lot of feeling each other out within the first two minutes. Garbrandt ended up connecting with a flurry of punches, and Dillashaw took some damage before slipping away. Dillashaw was really feeling the speed of Garbrandt’s punches. Garbrandt made Dillashaw eat another flurry of punches, a jab, and a late counterpunch that stunned the challenger. Fortunately for Dillashaw, the horn sounded to mark the end of round one.
Dillashaw whiffed on a kick early and it looked like maybe he was still a bit stunned from the end of round one. Dillashaw attempted a takedown, but Garbrandt avoids it. Suddenly, a right hook from Dillashaw sent Garbrandt down, and Dillashaw followed it up with several punches until referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the bout, making Dillashaw a two-time UFC bantamweight champion.
Jedrzejczyk vs. Namajunas:
The bout started with a lot of standing and reading the other early between the two. Both women then each bring out a flurry of punches. Suddenly, Namajunas landed a punch on the button and Jedrzejczyk falls to the canvas. Namajunas follows her down and landed punches on the defending champion against the cage. Jedrzejczyk managed to survive that onslaught, but Namajunas continued and unleashed ground-and-pound until John McCarthy called a stop to the bout, giving Namajunas the title win.
