UFC 224: Nunes Pummels Pennington
Amanda Nunes completely dominated her UFC 224 title bout with Raquel Pennington, scoring a fifth-round TKO to retain the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
Nunes focused on leg kicks in the opening minute, scoring significant damage and even made Pennington stumble at one point. The two ended up exchanging, and while each scored a jab at the start, Nunes just simply got the better of things and dominated the first round.
Pennington’s leg was all bruised and discolored after the opening round, and it showed to affect her performance throughout the fight. Pennington did not apply as much pressure in the second, making the champion chase her. The two clinched up, and it looked like the challenger could be favored with some dirty boxing. Pennington even landed a takedown, staying in top position before Nunes gets to her feet and swung away before the bell.
Nunes scored her first takedown of the bout about 90 seconds into the third round, and then she spent the next 90 seconds in the top game. Throughout the round, Nunes continues to work the leg and land upstairs with several strikes and knees. It was clear at this point that Pennington was gassing badly.
Things slowed down as the fight entered the championship rounds, but Nunes landed a couple of good knees before tripping Pennington and bringing the fight back to full guard. Pennington scrambled but, Nunes made her eat several knees till the horn and busted the challenger’s nose open.
Prior to the fifth round, Pennington expressed a desire for her corner to throw in the towel, but her coaches refused. At this point, Pennington had no energy left, and Nunes easily got the fight to the ground and pounded away before the referee stepped in.
