UFC Exec: We Pitched Nurmagomedov at UFC 217
Last November, Khabib Nurmagomedov stopped Michael Johnson at UFC 205, the same card that featured Conor McGregor winning the UFC Lightweight Championship. Angry about being robbed of a potential title shot, McGregor became public enemy No. 1 to Nurmagomedov.
At UFC 216, after nearly a year with no title defenses by McGregor, an interim lightweight champion will be crowned when Tony Ferguson takes on Kevin Lee. Meanwhile, we have not seen Nurmagomedov since UFC 205. Nurmagomedov and Ferguson were originally supposed to have an interim title clash back at UFC 209, but Nurmgomedov pulled out the week of the fight due to weight-cutting issues.
UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby provided a little more as to what has been going on with Nurmagomedov. He claims the UFC offered to still have the showdown between him and Ferguson on Nov. 4 at UFC 217.
“Just to clear things up, a fight was offered to Nurmagomedov on Nov. 4th, and at that point we were trying to put cards together towards the end of the year. I was informed that he could not make that date and he probably wouldn’t be able to fight until at least December. And so, that left Tony without a dance partner and it’s not just about one guy, it’s about two guys.”
It’s still unknown when Nurmagomedov will step back into the Octagon.
UFC 216 takes place on Oct. 7 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
