Jessie Vargas returned to the ring for the first time in 13 months on Dec. 15, defeating Aaron Herrera in a Premier Boxing Champions main event.
While there wasn’t much to comment on for the opening round, other than Vargas’ jabbing, Vargas seemed more aggressive in the second. He followed up his power punching with feinting and utilizing the jab again.
Herrera tried to get in some more action of his own in the third and make it a wild fight, but Vargas was able to keep him at a distance. The fourth was basically a repeat of the previous round.
Vargas managed to land a knockdown in the sixth, and while Hererra got up, the former WBO junior welterweight and welterweight champion was able to cruise his way through the whole second half of the fight, let alone the rest of the round.
Vargas threw flurries of punches in the final round in a last-ditch effort to get the stoppage, but he was unable to.
Vargas swept the judges’ scorecards, winning 100-89 on all three cards.
