Chris Weidman has dreamed of headlining an event in his hometown of Long Island for years, and he will have that opportunity on Saturday. He faces Kelvin Gastelum at the Nassau Coliseum, and the bout is a must-win for the former middleweight champion.
Weidman has been on a three-fight skid since his days of reigning at the top of the 185 lb. division. Most recently he suffered a controversial TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi at UFC 210 in Buffalo. Prior to that, he was knocked out by Yoel Romero at the UFC’s New York debut in November at Madison Square Garden.
Fighting in New York has been a dream of Weidman’s, but so far the results have been less than stellar. That didn’t stop the Long Island native from jumping at the opportunity to face a tough opponent at the promotion’s first fight at the Nassau Coliseum.
Gastelum’s struggles have primarily been outside of the cage, as weight-cutting woes forced him from welterweight to the middleweight division. He’s looked fantastic since doing so however, defeating Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort by TKO since making the jump to 185. He will look to prove he belongs at the top of the division when he takes on former champion Chris Weidman.
