After competing at strawweight for her first 10 MMA bouts, Paige VanZant makes her flyweight debut at the upcoming UFC Fight Night event in St. Louis, Missouri.
That event’s card has recently suffered a blow, as the scheduled co-main event between Vitor Belfort and Uriah Hall (likely Belfort’s retirement bout) was canceled after Hall suffered a seizure and passed out prior to the weigh-ins.
Since the establishment of the mandatory early weigh-in 18 months ago, 51 UFC fighters have either failed to make weigh or didn’t weigh in. Weight cutting has been a highly controversial topic — while competing at a smaller weight class may give a fighter a size advantage, is it too much of a price on a fighter’s health?
VanZant recently talked with The Players’ Tribune about the dangers of weight cutting.
