WBC Considering Splitting Heavyweight Division
According to World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, his organization is exploring the idea of creating an 18th division for their governing body. At their annual convention, Suliaman pitched the idea of splitting the heavyweight division in two, heavyweight and super heavyweight.
Sulaiman stated that the new weight class would be created above the cruiserweight limit of 200 pounds, but where it would end and where the super heavyweight limit would begin is still not close to being decided.
The WBC is in only preliminary stages of exploration, but this has not been the first time a super-heavyweight division was pitched.
In comments to ESPN Deportes,Sulaimán explained that
“We will ask the World Boxing Council’s medical team to do a study on the weight of heavyweight fighters. There are some who weigh 210 pounds and there are others that exceed 250 pounds, and that’s a world of difference. But we will inquire about how fighters are doing with such a difference of weight.”
The WBC says the process will last as little as six months before they make a decision on adding the new division. The want to get as much information as possible before presenting this idea to boxing commissions.
