WBC Orders Linares To Fight Garcia
Coming out of their annual conference, the WBC has officially ordered its lightweight ‘diamond’ champion Jorge Linares face their world champion Mikey Garcia where both championships will be on the line.
Negotiations between both teams are reportedly beginning, yet it is yet to be seen if Garcia intends to move back down to lightweight. In a year where Garcia moved up to face Adrien Broner, as well as calling out Miguel Cotto for a fight at 154 pounds, one must wonder if he’d go back to face Linares at lightweight.
Garcia’s older brother and trainer, Robert, recently mentioned that a Linares fight may happen in either February or March, but also claimed they were looking for a December fight with either Miguel Cotto or Robert Easter Jr. The challenge to Cotto by Garcia has not been taken seriously by Cotto’s team, and with Cotto’s December 2nd fight with Sadam Ali all but signed, that fight may never occur.
We will more than likely not see Linares in a ring until 2018, as he the top challenger is just coming off a split decision win over Luke Campbell. A fight that had Campbell take Linares to the distance and “Cool Hand” lose via a very narrow margin on the scorecards.
