WKF Premier League Day 1 Results
Jan. 26 marked the first of three days of competition at the Karate 1-Premier League Open in Paris.
In the kumite portion of the competition, arguably the best performance came from world champion and French native Alexandra Recchia. Despite developing a nasty cut during her day, the 29-year-old French karateka won all four bouts she competed in, scoring a total of 10 points and not getting scored against at all. The highlight of Recchia’s day may have very well been a 5-0 victory over Shara Hubrich of Germany in the semifinals.
Recchia will compete in the Female Kumite -50kg finals later on in the tournament against Japan’s Miho Miyahara.
Meanwhile, Steven Da Costa outscored all three of his opponents on day one 25-0. The 21-year-old, who was The World Games champion in 2017, will compete for his first karate gold this weekend. His opponent in the final will be Hiroto Shinohara of Japan.
The finals of Male Kumite -60kg will see Brazil’s Douglas Brose face Darkhan Assadilov of Kazakhstan, and the final for Female Kumite -55kg has Syakilla Salni Jefry Krishnan of Malaysia taking on France’s Sabrina Ouihaddadene. Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan and Ken Nishimura of Japan will face off in the Male Kumite -75kg final.
Japan dominated the kata portion of the competition, as the Female Kata final will be all-Japan. Kiyou Shimizu, the current world champion, won all but one of her bouts with 5-0 scores to advance to the final, while Emiri Iwamoto achieved three 5-0 scores and two 4-1 scores to get to the gold medal contest.
