The injury that sidelined Abner Mares from his WBA super featherweight title challenge against Gervonta Davis has turned out to be more serious than an elbow injury.
In an interview with FS1, Mares admitted that for the second time in his career he’s suffered a detached retina for the second time in his fighting career, negating the initial report of an elbow injury.
Mares admitted to Kate Abdo that he’s okay with retiring if it is recommended by his doctor, but hopefully is able to return to the ring once fully healed.
Davis now faces Hugo Ruiz on February 9th from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
