Adesanya Defeats Silva At UFC 234

In what has been a very turbulent few hours for UFC before the company’s return to Australia, the day ends with Israel Adesanya standing on top of the world with a win over Anderson Silva.

In the main event of UFC 234, Adesanya defeated Anderson Silva by unanimous decision in what was ultimately a mirror match between the two UFC stars.

Adesanya’s gameplan was to attack Silva with dozens of leg kicks and take advantage of any openings upstairs with boxing. The two men spent plenty of time taunting each other and entertaining the Australian crowd with their respective antics.

There was no ground game whatsoever as the fight was a striking battle from the opening bell to the very end. Adesanya outlanded Silva in significant strikes throughout the fight as Silva would often leave his hands down and goad Adesanya to throw punches at Silva. By the end of the night, Adesanya and Silva exchanged pleasantries and praise each other after the fight before and after the winner was determined.

In regards to his fighting future, Silva stated that he’s not sure what’s next for him. The 43-year-old Silva has not fought since 2017 when he defeated Derek Brunson at UFC 208.

The show underwent some last-second reconstruction as Adesanya vs. Silva was not the original main event. UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker was slated to headline with a title defense against Kelvin Gastelum, but Whittaker went down with a hernia, forcing the fight to get canceled. In its place was the fight between Adesanya and Silva while a matchup between Marcos Mariano and Lando Vannata was elevated to the co-main event.

As for the new co-main event, Vannata managed to get Mariano down on the mat and tried to get the stoppage midway through the round. Although unsuccessful, Vannata would take Mariano down again late in the round, lands an elbow strike and then locked in a kimura lock to get the victory with only five seconds remaining in the round.

A bantamweight fight between¬†Rani Yahya¬†and Ricky Simon started off with Simon bringing fireworks to the octagon and dropping Yahya in the first round. Simon, wary of Yahya’s ground game, would allow Yahya to get back up on his feet. Yahya missed a wild left hand and tripped himself back down. Time and time again, whenever Yahya would go down, Simon would let Yahya get back up to his feet and refused to engage in some mat wrestling.

Yahya eventually stayed vertical and brought the fight to Simon. Yahya landed a right hand and Simon was cut near his right eye. Moments later, Simon dropped Yahya once more and let his opponent to get back up. The third round saw more of the same action, but Simon did manage to get a takedown and looked to end the fight by hitting hammer fists on a downed Yahya. Simon was unable to get the stoppage but did get the victory.

The lone women’s fight on the main card saw Montana De La Rosa dominate¬†Nadia Kassem throughout nearly eight minutes. The fight was spent entirely on the ground as De La Rosa was on top and kept hitting Kassem with non-stop ground-and-pound offense. The second round saw De La Rosa try and go for various submissions and eventually managed to get the win with an armbar.

Opening the main card was a fight between Jim Crute and Sam Alvey that ended rather quickly. Crute dropped Alvey early in the fight and walked away thinking the fight was over but realized the bout was still happening and continued to attack. Crute quickly threw several big strikes, prompting the referee to end the bout and Alvey was extremely upset at the stoppage, yelling at the referee for what he believed was an early stoppage.
