Alberto Machado Out To Prove He Can Become Champion Again If He Beats Angel Fierro
Alberto Machado’s goal is to win another world championship but Angel Fierro stands in his way.
Machado and Fierro are set to collide in the main event of a Ring City USA card on March 18. The bout will be contested in the lightweight division. It’ll be Machado’s first bout since December 2019.
Machado is a former WBA (Regular) Super-Featherweight Champion. He captured the gold by knocking out Jezreel Corrales back in October 2017. After two successful title defenses, Machado was stunned by Andrew Cancio, losing his title via fourth-round knockout. Machado ended up suffering another KO loss to Cancio in the same fashion, a body shot in their rematch.
With those two losses behind him, Machado wants to show the world that he can reach the mountain top again. During a virtual press conference, Machado told reporters that the Fierro fight is an important step back to a world championship fight (via BoxingScene.com).
“I expect a great fight because Angel Fierro, for him, this is a great opportunity. Come to Puerto Rico, fight against a former world champion. … But I am ready for him. He looks at this opportunity as big for him and his family. Maybe he comes really motivated, but I am motivated, too, because I can prove myself to continue my career for my family and demonstrate why I became a world champion [at] super-featherweight.”
Join FIGHT SPORTS later today for a LIVE STREAM of the Machado vs. Fierro prelims beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. Ring City USA will be setting up the live feed on Twitch. The action will transition to the NBC Sports Network at 9 p.m. ET.
