Alberto Puello Defends WBA Title, Erick Rosa Wins
WBA Interim-super Lightweight Champion Alberto Puello defended his title for the second time against Jesús Antonio Rubio on Wednesday night in Santa Domingo. The Dominican star retained the title via unanimous decision over his Mexican challenger. Puello was sublime against Rubio throughout the fight, showing his great striking ability and conditioning.
All three judges ruled 120-107 in favor of the Dominican starlet.
In the post-fight interview, the champ said that he was expecting a KO finish to the fight instead. “I want to thank God for helping me with my career. For a moment I thought I was going to take him [by knockout], but boxing is unpredictable; he recovered [from the knockdown] and put up a good fight,” Puello said.
Puello has held the interim strap since July 2019 when he overcame Jonathan Alonso by unanimous decision.
Another Dominican fighter made history on Wednesday. Erick Rosa became the interim-WBA minimum weight champ by defeating Ricardo Astuvilca via unanimous decision. The 21-year-old featured in the co-main event to grab the vacant title. This was the first time Astuvilca, 32, got defeated in his pro career.
“I am very proud to be Dominican, to reach a world championship that makes me the first in Latin America and the fourth in the world to do so with less than five professional fights,” Rosa said.
