Alexander Povetkin Hopes To Get A Rematch With Anthony Joshua
Alexander Povetkin is hoping to get a second crack at Anthony Joshua.
Back on September 22, 2018, Povetkin took on Joshua in a WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Title bout. Going into the fight, Povetkin was riding an eight-fight winning streak. Joshua won the bout via seventh-round TKO.
Povetkin has since gone 2-0-1. He captured the interim WBC Heavyweight Title in an upset victory over Dillian Whyte. He’s due to face Whyte in a rematch sometime in 2021. The bout has been delayed due to Povetkin’s recovery from COVID-19.
Speaking to Igor Lazorin, Povetkin said he was impressed by Joshua’s recent ninth-round knockout win over Kubrat Pulev and hopes to fight “AJ” again in the future (via BoxingScene.com).
“I watched, Joshua boxed well. He is healthier, more powerful, his punches are more noticeable. He knocked Pulev down once, then twice. Well, then it all ended.
“[I’ve reviewed my fight against Joshua] two or three times, I guess. Now I’m beginning to understand what was wrong back then. I have already worked out those errors that were there. We fixed them. It’s hard to talk about [what I would do in a rematch]. I will try to avoid the mistakes that were made back then. Is a rematch realistic? Everything in life is real, so why not! I would love to box against Joshua again.”
Joshua has been eyeing a big title unification bout with WBC Champion Tyson Fury. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn believes the bout will be good to go for May once small details can be hammered out.
