Alistair Overeem-Augusto Sakai Reportedly Set For September UFC Card

Looking to become one step closer to another UFC Heavyweight Title opportunity, Alistair Overeem is ready to return to action right away.

ESPN was the first to report that Alistair Overeem is set to clash against a rising star in Augusto Sakai. The date for the bout would be on September 5.

Overeem (46-18, 1 NC) last fought in May, beating Walt Harris via TKO. It was one of the first big events to take place in Florida for the UFC. A former Strikeforce and DREAM Heavyweight Champion, Overeem made a name for himself over at PRIDE. He joined the UFC in 2011, beating Brock Lesnar via TKO. “The Reem” is 11-7 with the promotion, and only fought for the UFC Heavyweight Title once. He lost to Stipe Miocic back at UFC 203 in 2016 and hasn’t received a title shot since.

Sakai (15-1-1) made his MMA debut in 2011. The 29-year-old fought for Bellator before competing on Dana White’s Contender Series. Making his official debut with the promotion against Chase Sherman, Sakai is 4-0 with the promotion since 2019. His last bout was at the end of May, beating Blagoy Ivanov via split decision.

It is unknown where the event would be taking place at the moment. The UFC is in Abu Dhabi this month for “Fight Island”, and is set to return to Las Vegas in August. There may be a chance the promotion returns to “Fight Island” if the coronavirus pandemic forces state’s in America to shut down again.

Other rumored bouts for September 5 include Nicco Montano v. Julia Avila and Montana De La Rosa v. Maryna Moroz.
