Aljamain Sterling vs T.J. Dillashaw Targeted For Bantamweight Title Fight At UFC 279
Bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling is expected to face T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 279, which is expected to take place on Sept. 10 at a still to be determined location.
Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans have confirmed this fight to be in the works, however, it was MMA Junkie to first report on the story.
Sterling (21-3) will look for the second consecutive defense of his bantamweight title after earning a split-decision victory over former champion Petr Yan back in April. This fight truly cemented him as the champion and settled a rivalry between the two, as Sterling won the title originally when Yan was disqualified because of an illegal knee at UFC 259 in March 2020
Meanwhile, TJ Dillashaw (17-4) will look to become a three-time UFC champion. The fighter from California won the title for the first time in 2014 and did it once again in 2017.
If Dillashaw does manage to win, he will join Randy Couture as the only three-time champions in the history of UFC.
Currently, ESPN has Sterling ranked No. 1 and Dillashaw No. 3 in the world at bantamweight.
