Alvarado Pulls Upset, Finishes Cancio

While most of the combat world was focused on Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz’s heavyweight title rematch, Rene Alvarado made his own mark on the boxing scene. Alvarado pulled off a shocker by defeating Andrew Cancio to win the WBA (Regular) super featherweight championship.

This served as a rematch of their December 2015 encounter, which saw Cancio knock out Alvarado. This rematch served as the main event of a Matchroom Boxing USA card at the Fantasy Springs Casino Resort in Indio, California.

After the two stood and traded with one another to start things off, Alvarado managed to cut Cancio open around his eye and began to target the area.

Cancio decided to change strategy in the sixth, aiming for the body, but Alvarado continued to land at will on Cancio’s head and nearly swelled his eye shut.

At the end of the seventh round, the referee elected to wave off the fight, giving Alvarado the upset victory and championship.
