Alvarez-Poirier Added to UFC 211
While the first two pay-per-view cards of 2017 were not exactly blockbusters, the UFC’s trip to Dallas in May appears to be quite the stacked event. UFC 211 in Dallas has added another top fight, one between former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and #9 contender Dustin Poirier.
ESPN’s Bret Okamoto first reported that Alvarez and Poirier have verbally agreed to the fight at the May 13 event.
Alvarez last fought in November, headlining one of the promotion’s biggest events in history when he defended his lightweight title against Conor McGregor at Madison Square Garden. The fight went disastrously for Alvarez, as McGregor dominated him from bell to bell and finished him in the second round.
While he may have lost his lightweight title, Alvarez remains one of the toughest fighters in the division and will look to get back in the win column when he takes on the tough challenger Poirier.
Poirier, who also lost to McGregor in a featherweight fight before moving up to 155 lbs., last fought at UFC 208 where he defeated Jim Miller in a Fight of the Night performance.
The 28-year-old is 3-1 since his move to the lightweight division, his one loss coming via knockout to Michael Johnson in September.
UFC 211 is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic and Junior Dos Santos, and also features a strawweight championship bout between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade. A welterweight contenders’ matchup between Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal is also set for the card.
