Alvarez: ‘Real Chance’ McGregor KOs Mayweather
Eddie Alvarez is no stranger to Conor McGregor. Alvarez and McGregor verbally jabbed en route to UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden, where McGregor knocked out Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. And Alvarez says McGregor has the ability to knock out Mayweather as well.
Alvarez remembers all the words traded between himself and McGregor, as well as McGregor’s mind games. He enjoyed it back then, and Alvarez tells the Five Rounds Podcast that he enjoyed the Mayweather-McGregor World Tour just as much.
And he thought one athlete’s talk was better than the other’s.
“I was sitting back with some popcorn, really enjoying this tour they went through,” Alvarez said. “The most comical thing for me, even when I watch movies, is the guy who’s so crazy confident about himself, with the mink jacket — to me, that is so funny. I wish I could be like that. As a fighter, I wish I could do that, so I could make people laugh. But I can’t, it’s not my style. I’m glad he does it. We need guys like that.
“Floyd’s stuff, I don’t know. I don’t think there’s a lot of intelligence behind it.”
Alvarez felt McGregor’s punching power during their bout, especially when he was TKO’d during the second round. And while it’s a different sport, one McGregor has no experience in, and there’s bigger gloves, Alvarez feels Mayweather may be underestimating McGregor’s hand power.
In fact, Alvarez feels Mystic Mac’s prediction of a knockout within the first four rounds is a real possibility.
“Within [the first] four rounds, if you don’t think Conor can knock this guy out, you’re an idiot or you just don’t know fighting,” Alvarez said. “It can very well happen. If he doesn’t get it done by then, then it could look very one-sided. The technical boxing of Mayweather is enough to make it look really one-sided.
“But Conor, there is a very real chance that he can put him away.”
