Alvarez Signs With ONE Championship

Former UFC champion Eddie Alvarez has now officially signed with Asian combat sports promotion ONE Championship.

It was rumored for weeks that the two sides were deep in negotiations, but Chatri Sityodtong, the promotion’s CEO, announced on Twitter that Alvarez has signed with the company with a video of Alvarez signing his contract.

Alvarez was at one point the UFC lightweight champion after beating Rafael dos Anjos in the summer of 2016, but would go on to lose the belt to Conor McGregor at UFC 205.

Since the loss to McGregor, Alvarez fought three more times in the octagon, sporting a 1-1 record with one no contest. That no contest came in May 2017 against Dustin Poirier but then Alvarez bounced back at the end of the year when a knockout win over Justin Gaethje. Alvarez’s last fight in the UFC took place earlier this year when he lost to Poirier at UFC on FOX 30.

Sityodtong also made a press release further talking about signing Alvarez.

“I am thrilled to announce that multiple-time world champion Eddie Alvarez will be joining ONE Championship on a multiple-bout contract. Eddie is one of the world’s best martial artists in the world, and is no doubt a tremendous addition to the ONE roster. The ONE Championship roster is incredibly deep with talents such as Shinya Aoki, Eduard Folayang, and Amir Khan, among others. I am excited to have Eddie in that mix and to see some amazing matchups and performances. This is no doubt one of the biggest athlete signings in the history of ONE Championship,” Sityodtong said.

No date for Alvarez’s ONE Championship debut has yet to be announced.
