Alvarez’s Return Postponed Due To Injury

Former WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Eleider Alvarez will not return to the ring in June as planned, as he has suffered a torn ligament in his foot.

For a while, Alvarez was planned to face former two-time super middleweight title challenger Jesse Hart, who would be moving up to 175, with date and location the only factors needing to be resolved in negotiations. The fight would have either taken place on June 15 in Las Vegas — as part of the undercard for Tyson Fury vs. Tom Schwarz – or on June 28 at the Videotron Center in Quebec, Canada.

“Eleider Alvarez will unfortunately have to wait a little longer before returning to the ring,” Yvon Michael, Alvarez’s promoter, said.

Alvarez won the WBO championship in spectacular upset fashion from Sergey Kovalev in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last August. After getting beaten up for six rounds, Alvarez powered back in the seventh and knocked Kovalev down three times to claim the championship.

Alvarez dropped the title back to Kovalev in a one-sided decision in February. The fight against Hart would have served him the purpose of getting back into title contention.
