Alycia Baumgardner Fails A Test For A Banned Steroid

Alycia Baumgardner, the undisputed junior lightweight champion, has failed a test for the steroid Mesterolone.

The news arrives in the aftermath of Baumgardner’s second defense of her titles, as she beat Christina Linardatou via a unanimous decision.

The victory had allowed Baumgardner to get her revenge over Linardatou, who had beaten the champion in 2018.

Thereafter, there were talks over future fights with Amanda Serrano and the winner of Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron.

However, according to Dan Rafael, Baumgardner’s positive test came on June 12th, 2023, which was three days before her victory over Linardatou.

This was after Drug Free Sport, a testing organization used by Matchroom Boxing, undertook a urine sample which discovered the positive test.

The substance in question is known to be taken orally, which has clouded the sport of boxing.

The recent failed tests from Conor Benn, Amir Khan and Dillian Whyte have drawn a spotlight on the need to address drugs in the sport.

Statement

“Matchroom can today confirm that Alycia Baumgardner returned an adverse analytical finding as part of a random anti-doping protocol instituted voluntarily for her bout with Christina Linardatou in Detroit on 15 July.

“Matchroom was first informed of this result on 12 August. The applicable regulatory authorities are also aware and we defer to such bodies for further action and guidance as a full investigation is conducted.

“Matchroom is committed to promoting a clean and fair sport for all athletes, and will assist Alycia and her team during this time, affording her the appropriate due process. As we wait to receive more information, Matchroom will not be making any further comment,” Matchroom
