Amanda Serrano Vs. Sarah Mahfoud To Come This Fall

Amanda Serrano will be returning to the ring with the goal of being the undisputed champion. has confirmed Serrano’s (42-2-1, 30KOs) next move is to face Sarah Mahfoud for the multi-belt featherweight title unification. Event promoter Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions announced the fight on Tuesday.

The fight will be a co-feature for the Joe Joyce-Joseph Parker heavyweight bout for September 24 on BT Sport Box Office from AO Arena in Manchester.

“I am delighted to welcome a modern boxing icon in Amanda Serrano onto our huge September 24 card with four world title belts on the line,” Warren stated. “The stakes are obviously very high, which fits in nicely with the main event between Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker fighting for the right to take on the winner out of Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua.

Serrano was supposed to fight Brenda Carabajal (18-5-1, 9 KOs) on August 6 for the WBO mandatory title defense. But the show was cancelled after a dispute about the final contracted weight for the Jake Paul-Hasim Rahman Jr. Fight.

Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions announced that the non-televised undercard fighters would be compensated 50% of their contracted purse. They would not have to commit to an agreed upon fight in the future. Serrano-Carabajal was just one of the bouts rescheduled.

Although many look forward to a Serrano-Mahfoud fight, the latter was a required commitment by Serrano to keep her WBO title. She almost had to give it up following her April 30 split decision defeat to undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor.

Within the WBO rules, it requires a reigning titleholder who is unsuccessful in a title fight outside of his or her reign to be subject for their title being stripped from them. An exception to the rule is in the case of designated WBO “Super Champions,” which Serrano has herself.

A ruling landed in favor of Serrano back in May. The fighter was able to retain her title. This came five days after Carabajal beat Debora Anahi Dionicuis in a tenth-round decision in their interim WBO featherweight title fight on May 13.

It is expected that the fight will move forward and that the WBO will be sending the winner to face Carabajal.

Mahfoud beat Carabala in a February 2020 interim IBF featherweight title fight, receiving an upgrade to full titlist later on this year. She also had a successful defense back in April, a ten-round decision over Nina Meinke.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me to fight for four world title belts against one of the biggest stars in the sport of boxing,” noted Mahfoud.

“It will be my first fight outside of Denmark and I cannot think of a better place to fully introduce myself and my talent to the wider world than beating Amanda Serrano in Manchester.”

Serrano will enter her first true unification bout.

“I am so excited over the prospect of fighting in the UK,” said Serrano. “It has been on my to-do list for a long time, with the amazing fans who really get behind the sport, as well as the huge growth in women’s boxing.”

Two fights have since followed at lightweight for Serrano since her last title defense.

This will be Serrano’s first fight in England and her second overall fight in Europe.

Serrano is now one belt closer to becoming Puerto Rico’s first undisputed champion in the three- or four-belt era, the other titlist being the WBA champion Erika Cruz who fights on September 3.
