Anthony Joshua Targets A Return In September

Anthony Joshua plans to return to the ring in September.

The former Unified Heavyweight Champion is on an impressive run of form since teaming up with Ben Davidson. Consecutive knockout wins over Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou have put Joshua in the conversation for a title shot. Reports indicate he could fight the winner of Filip Hrgovic vs Daniel Dubois.

Both boxers fight on the Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev card on June 1. The fight is for Hrgovic’s IBF Interim Title. However, it could take place for the full title if the winner of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk is stripped. Fury and Usyk fight for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship on May 18, with the winner required to defend the IBF belt.

There is a rematch clause in place, however, meaning the IBF must decide if they strip the winner for not fighting either Hrgovic or Dubois next. Joshua could also face the winner of Fury-Usyk before any rematch takes place. Joshua is prepared to face whoever was put in front of him.

“Around September is when I’ve been told [my return]. I was hoping for June. I’ve got some time to go on dates now and mingle a little bit. I’m training at the minute. I’ve got two months before I get into training camp. No, [I don’t know the opponent], but I think what they’re saying is, ‘Be patient,’ because you’ve got Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk for all the belts. And then once that’s done, hopefully, I can kick down the door and get my opportunity,” Joshua said
