Arum Open To Crawford vs. Lopez

Bob Arum is fully behind a Terence Crawford vs. Teofimo Lopez fight.

The Top Rank promoter is intent on making the fight if Lopez beats Jamaine Ortiz on February 8. The Takeover defends his WBO Junior Welterweight Belt, which he won from Josh Taylor. Lopez has previously called out Crawford’s wins, stating that his victories over Kell Brook, Jose Benavidez Jr. and Errol Spence Jr. were questionable.

Teo referenced all three as having problems coming into the fight. Lopez then challenged Crawford to a bout at 147. Bud responded by telling Lopez to stay at 140 and focus on the names in his weight class. But Arum was open to making that fight since he has promoted Crawford.

“I promote Teofimo. Teofimo says he wants that fight, and half of that fight, I can say, is going to happen or should happen. I don’t promote Terence Crawford any longer. It’s up to Terence Crawford to see if he wants that fight, and if he does, I’m sure we’ll be able to put it together.

“I certainly can’t talk at this particular point for Terence Crawford. It’s up to them. So, I can’t say if the fight is realistic or not realistic. From the standpoint of Teofimo, if he’s successful against Jamaine Ortiz [on Thursday night], yeah, sure the fight can happen,” Arum said

Crawford’s trainer, Brian McIntyre, has dismissed his fighter taking on Jaron Ennis, meaning Lopez is unlikely to get a shot. A fight against Canelo Alvarez is Crawford’s number-one priority. That would require him to jump up three weight divisions to take on the Mexican for his undisputed title. A win makes Bud the first-ever boxer to become a three-weight undisputed champion in the four-belt era. But if Bud cannot get Canelo, Lopez may become an option.
