Benavidez Questions Canelo’s Career Over Clenbuterol Failed Test

David Benavidez has questioned Canelo Alvarez’s career following his prior positive test for clenbuterol.

Canelo tested positive after his first fight with Gennady Golovkin. Alvarez took the fight to GGG, much to the shock of boxing fans. While the result was declared a split draw, many felt Golovkin had done enough to win. After the result, Alvarez tested positive, resulting in a six-month ban.

Canelo challenged the findings by submitting a hair follicle sample, which came back negative. He also argued that the clenbuterol came from tainted meat. The six-month ban was criticized for not being enough. Looking back, Benavidez criticized Canelo’s career.

“Well look at this. I’m gonna throw another thing at you guys. When the greatest Canelo came out – the one that fought Triple G the first time – dude popped dirty for Clenbuterol bro. Why do you think the second fight didn’t happen? For me, that was the best Canelo I’ve ever seen, but that Canelo off of steroids.

“Everybody else that he’s fought. Amir Khan, Daniel Jacobs, what the…[heck]is his name, Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, these guys are all weak bro. So that’s why I see Canelo Alvarez and I think he’s not as good as everybody thinks. Because the best one was off Clenbuterol. That’s why he looked so good,” Benavidez said

Benavidez has tried desperately to get the Canelo fight for a shot at the Undisputed Super Middleweight Belt. Canelo has requested $200 million, leaving the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion out of the picture. Benavidez has since then moved up to 175 to fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. Provided he beats Gvozdyk, fans will demand the Canelo fight again.
