Berinchyk Wins WBO Lightweight Title In A Split Decision Over Navarrete

Denys Berinchyk secured the vacant WBO Lightweight Belt with a split-decision win over Emanuel Navarrete

Both fighters knew a win opened up unification fights with Gervonta Davis (WBA Belt), Shakur Stevenson (WBC Belt) and Vasiliy Lomachenko (IBF Belt). Berinchyk started on the front, while Navarrete attempted to use his reach advantage. Berinchyk took the first with his pressure, but Navarrete connected with his straight right and overhand left to come back stronger in round two.

The Ukrainian responded with a right hook, only for Navarrete to respond with an uppercut in the third. The back-and-forth action saw both fighters neck-and-neck in the first half of the fight. Berinchyk started to force the pace further, leaving Navarrete to take the fight to his opponent.

But an accidental head butt in round ten disrupted the flow. Upon the restart, Berinchyk won the exchanges, forcing Navarrete to look for the knockout. It never came, as Berinchyk won on the cards: 115-113, 116-112 and 112-116. Berinchyk followed his Ukrainian countryman Oleksandr Usyk, who had beaten Tyson Fury on the same night to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion.
