Bob Arum: Fury Has Activated His Rematch Clause For Usyk

Bob Arum says Tyson Fury has enacted his rematch clause for another Oleksandr Usyk fight.

Fury lost a split decision as Usyk became the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. Fury had some success in the middle rounds. However, Usyk was the superior fighter, almost stopping Fury. In round nine, the Ukrainian landed a massive left hand, followed by a flurry of combinations. Fury was held up by the ropes as the referee gave him a standing-eight count.

In his post-fight comments, Fury felt he had done enough to win. The Gypsy King made contrasting comments about whether he would take the rematch. In the post-fight ring interview, Fury wanted to take the rematch. However, in the post-fight presser, Fury said he would take time off before deciding. Now, the fighter wants to run things back. Arum expects the rematch to happen near the end of the year or early 2025.

“Tyson will win the rematch [with Oleksandr Usyk] and fight [Anthony Joshua] sometime next year at Wembley Stadium. That’ll be a massive fight as well,” Arum said

Usyk’s team has requested an exemption from the IBF, which would allow him to rematch Fury for undisputed again. Under the IBF rules, the champion must face his mandatory. However, since boxing had not seen an Undisputed Heavyweight Champion since 1999, Usyk’s team have now applied to get the IBF to make an exception.

“We’re waiting for a decision to be made. I think it’s more important for Tyson Fury now, not for Oleksandr. Oleksandr, of course, is a two-time unified [champion at cruiserweight and heavyweight] and if the next fight is just for the three belts, I don’t think it’s going to be fair for either of the two guys.

“Either Tyson Fury or for Oleksandr. But as far as importance, I think it’s more important for Team Fury to get this title. Imagine if Fury wins – he’s not going to be undisputed, so he is losing the chance. The rematch, the clause, was so both guys had the chance to be undisputed. I hope the IBF are going to make the right decision,” Egis Klimas (Usyk’s manager)
