Canelo Alvarez Confirms Bivol Rematch Will Take Place In September

Canelo Alvarez has confirmed that his rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol will occur in September.

The Mexican is seeking to avenge his loss last year at the hands of the Russian in a unanimous decision. While that may be the case, he has something closer to deal with at home.

He is set to defend his undisputed super middleweight crown against John Ryder on May 6th, 2023, which will be his first fight since the Bivol loss and his subsequent wrist surgery.

The odds of Canelo causing an upset against Bivol are slim, given the nature in which he was bullied and outboxed.

So much so that fans were hoping to see the Mexican face David Benavidez instead following his victory against Caleb Plant since the ‘Mexican Monster’ is in line to face Canelo.

But in the meantime, Canelo has his eyes firmly on the challenge brought by Ryder, who, for all intents and purposes, has nothing to lose.

In his comments to Behind The Gloves, he said: “I don’t watch a lot of my opponents, but I saw one times, two times, but that’s it. Highlights, yeah. No single fight is easy.  Every fight is a hard fight, but I think it’s similar.

“Bivol is a really good fighter. He’s a solid champion at 175.  That’s what he maybe tried to say, but I don’t know. I need to find out.”
