Canelo Vs. Charlo Grand Arrivals – Key Quotes

In the run-up to their fight on September 30th, 2023, Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo had their grand arrivals at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

Canelo is the heavy favorite going into the fight, as Charlo will have to jump up two weight classes from 154. Alvarez holds all the belts at super middleweight, having become undisputed after beating Caleb Plant in 2021. His last few performances, however, have fallen below expectations. The loss to Dmitry Bivol, the decision wins over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder suggested Canelo was on the decline. However, the Mexican has reassured fans that he is back to full health following his wrist surgery.

Meanwhile, Charlo has been out of the ring for over a year since his victory over Brian Castano. That period of inactivity, coupled with the extra weight, could work against him. In addition, the media arrivals showed a crowd heavily in favor of Canelo, as there were some jeers for Charlo. Following the initial introductions, this is what both fighters had to say.

“It means a lot. I feel the love & the support of my people, and I just feel proud about representing my country. Thank you, everybody, for supporting me. I feel 100% right now, [and I] can say a lot of things, but I want to show you on Saturday. I want to show you on Saturday, and you’re going to see different Canelo on Saturday night.

“He’s a great fighter. He knows how to work. He’s a strong guy, and he has nothing to lose. He comes in my weight division and to come for everything. He’s a great fighter, but I’ve been in this position for a long time, and I’m ready. It’s going to be a great fight, but I’m going to win,” Canelo

“The world thinks Canelo is the best in the world, right? I’m going to come here and show the world why I’m the best in the world. I do this for the dogs, the hungry ones. I do this for the animals. I’m made for this.  It [a win] labels me as one of the greatest. After I beat Canelo, they’ll be screaming, ‘Charlo, Charlo, Charlo.’ It’s all great, it’s all good, it’s a beautiful thing.  I come to put on a great performance. The training camp was amazing.

“To be here at the T-Mobile Arena, standing in front of the MGM. I’d been in a whole bunch of these fights. Now it’s my time and my turn, and it’s my moment.  I’m going to shine when it’s time for it. We’re going to show you on September 30th. We can’t talk about it; we got to be about it. Come fight night, y’all got to see what I mean by all of that,” Charlo
