Chimaev vs. Whittaker Headlines UFC Saudi Arabia

Dana White has announced the headline event for the UFC’s first-ever Saudi Arabia card, a middleweight clash between Khamzat Chimaev and Robert Whittaker for June 22.

The card was initially meant for March 2. Ariel Helwani confirmed it was postponed, claiming the Saudis wanted a higher-profile card. White denied those suggestions, stating he never mentioned any fights happening in March. He also rejected reports it was postponed due to a poor-quality card. Now, MMA fans can expect a competitive event.

Khamzat enters the fight undefeated and coming off his first win over a former UFC champion. He won a hard-fought majority decision against ex-welterweight champ Kamaru Usman at UFC 294, keeping his undefeated record at 13-0. The former UFC Middleweight Champion, Whittaker, secured a unanimous decision victory against Paulo Costa at UFC 298 last month. He bounced back from losing to the current champion, Dricus du Plessis, at UFC 290 last year. The winner could be in line for a title shot.

In chief support, Alexander Volkov faces Sergei Pavlovich in an all-Russian heavyweight clash. Volkov has won his last three UFC fights, beating Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexandr Romanov, and Tai Tuivasa, respectively. His last loss came against UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall in 2022. Pavlovich also has a loss to Aspinall. The Russian was knocked out by Aspinall in his last fight at UFC 295 in the first round. The defeat ended his six-fight win streak, as Pavlovich will be desperate to set things right.
