Edgar Berlanga, Xander Zayas Remain Undefeated With Unanimous Decision Wins

Puerto Rican boxers Edgar Berlanga and Xander Zayas came out of Saturday night with another win, but some fans and critics say there is still work to be done.

Berlanga (19-0, 16 KOs) remained undefeated after earning a unanimous decision against Steve Rolls (21-2, 12 KOs) in the main event at New York’s Hulu Theater. Zayas (13-0, 9 KOs) went the distance for the fourth time in his career, defeating Quincy LaVallais (12-3, 7 KOs) on the undercard of the event.

Berlanga returned from a five-month layoff due to a torn left biceps against Marcelo Coceres in October on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder undercard. He won that bout via unanimous decision.

The Puerto Rican’s last three victories have been by unanimous decision, which have caused some fans to question the boxer’s potential after building a reputation as a knockout artist.

On Saturday, Rolls stayed active and used his legs to box while Berlanga was unable to effectively cut off the ring. Berlanga, 24, also seemed to constantly load up throughout the bout, but his punches weren’t able to put his opponent away.

Rolls out-landed Berlanga by three punches (123-of-447 to 120-of-314), according to CompuBox.

Meanwhile, Zayas, 19, kept up his reputation.

The scheduled eight-rounder went all the way and Zayas proved he had the stamina to last. Zayas continued to execute his patience and discipline, but didn’t seem to show much else.

However, the young boxer has proved that his skills are heading in the right direction.
