Frampton-Santa Cruz II Preview

On July 30 of last year, Carl Frampton entered the ring as an underdog against WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. Twelve hard-fought rounds later, Frampton became a two-division world champion, and the Fighter of the Year in the eyes of many.

That instant classic between Frampton and Santa Cruz demanded a rematch, and the fans will get their wish on Saturday night when the two fighters meet in Las Vegas.

Frampton (23-0) was counted out by many heading into the first contest, but he will not be the underdog this time. Santa Cruz (32-1-1) showed in the latter half of their first fight that he has the tools to be victorious, so the result is no foregone conclusion.

If Frampton can get his hand raised again, he will be able to close the Leo Santa Cruz chapter and move onto to proving himself as one of the pound-for-pound elites of the sport. If Santa Cruz can make the proper adjustments to avenge his first loss, then a trilogy between the two featherweights is the most likely outcome.

If you missed the first fight between Frampton and Santa Cruz, you can watch Showtime’s recap of the 2016 classic below. If the rematch can come close to matching the intensity and momentum swings of that matchup, fans will be in for a treat on Saturday night.
