Inoue Targets May Fight With Nery, Reclaims P4P Top Spot From Crawford

The undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue’s next fight could be against Luis Nery in May.

The Japanese created history by becoming a two-weight undisputed champion with a tenth-round knockout of Marlon Tapales. The win unified Inoue’s WBO and WBC belts with Tapales’ WBA and IBF belts. Inoue joined Terence Crawford as the only fighter to become undisputed in a second weight class in the four-belt era. The victory made him the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet after reclaiming the spot from Crawford.

Nery is Inoue’s WBC mandatory after he knocked out Azat Hovhannisyan and Froilan Saludar. He has a record of 35-1 with 27 knockouts. The Mexican cannot fight in Japan after he was banned for failing to make weight for his fight with Shinsuke Yamakaka in 2018. That could pose a problem since Inoue’s last five bouts were in Japan. In 2017, Nery also failed a test for Zilpaterol in his first victory over Shinsuke Yamanaka. Either way, Inoue’s next fight is soon.

“I think a lot of people know the rumour of a fight coming about in May. But I can’t say much about this yet because we’re under negotiation. But I want to make everybody happy so that I can show you a great fight next year as well,” Inoue

There is also a possibility that Murodjon Akhmadaliev may face Inoue. He watched the Japanese beat Tapales at ringside and is coming off a win over Kevin Gonzalez in December. The southpaw only has one loss on his record of 12-1. All the governing bodies have ranked him in the top ten. Before Inoue’s win, Akhmadaliev wanted to fight the winner.

“To me it’s very important, it’s the most important fight of my life, the opportunity to fight for four world titles for undisputed. For me the most important is my two titles, because I believe that they belong to me and that’s something that I want.

“I have a huge amount of respect for both fighters. I respect every single fighter in the world. I have nothing against Tapales. I know he is not the one who scored the fight. I believe that whoever is going to win the fight I believe I can beat any of those guys,” Akhmadaliev stated
