Is There An Update On Patrick Teixeira’s Next Fight?

WBO Light-Middleweight Champion Patrick Teixeira could have a potential challenger lined up.

Teixeira last competed back on November 30, 2019. He defeated Carlos Adames via unanimous decision to become the interim WBO Light-Middleweight titleholder. He was then elevated to full champion. Brian Castano is still the mandatory WBO Title challenger but Tim Tszyu’s team appears to think there’s a good chance at getting the Teixeira fight.

Tszyu’s promoter Matt Rose told FOX Sports Australia that while there are obstacles in the way, he’s hopeful that his fighter will meet Teixeira soon.

“All parties are very interested in making this fight happen – Teixeira’s promoters want to see him back in the ring defending his belt as soon as possible and the WBO is obviously in the business of keeping their champions active. There’s a few hurdles to get over but it’s looking good and it could all happen very quickly, plus it helps that the world just saw a big crowd at our event in Townsville.”

WBO President Paco Valcarcel took to his Twitter account to make it clear that Castano is still the mandatory challenger.

“Be advised an agreement is set for WBO Jr. Middleweight Teixeira/Castano as mandated by Championship Committee. The bout was set for April 25, but due to COVID-19, it was postponed. We’ve been informed it will be held November 2020. We standby committee’s ruling. NO EXCEPTIONS.”

Tszyu is coming off a TKO victory over Jeff Horn. The win improved Tszyu’s perfect pro boxing record to 16-0. It’s his 12th victory by way of knockout.

Despite the hope of Team Tszyu, it’s looking like Teixeira vs. Castano is next on the docket unless Teixeira drops his WBO gold or there’s a delay in getting Castano to fight in November.
