Isaac Cruz To Defend His Title In August Amid Growing Fanbase

Isaac Cruz will defend his WBA Junior Welterweight Title in August.

That is according to his promoter, Sean Gibbons. Cruz won his first-ever world title, stopping Rolando Romero in emphatic fashion on March 30 to secure an eighth-round TKO. Pitbull dominated the fight, almost stopping Romero in rounds one and seven.

The 140-pounder was the co-main event attraction on PBC’s first PPV with Amazon Prime Video. The mass exposure and impressive performance drew many plaudits. Paulie Malignaggi called Cruz the ‘second hottest Mexican fighter in boxing,’ behind Canelo Alvarez.

“At this point, he probably is the second hottest Mexican fighter in boxing besides Canelo Alvarez, who, of course, is the main attraction. In the moment right now, I don’t think there’s a Mexican fighter that is generating more talk in boxing besides Canelo Alvarez and Pitbull Cruz,” Malignaggi said

Now, he is in line to defend his belt in August as a main event attraction.

“Pitbull’ wants to get back in the ring and stay busy. Down here, it’s not Beatlemania – it’s Pitbullmania. People are writing songs for him, creating murals for him. It’s something,” Gibbons said

Cruz has several options on the table. He could face the winner of Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia, who face off on April 20. Haney defends his WBC Junior Welterweight Belt, indicating his desire to become undisputed at 140. A Cruz fight allows Haney to pursue a unification.

Garcia was also open to the fight after he reacted to Cruz’s win over Romero. Ryan claimed Cruz was tailor-made for him after the Mexican called him out post-Romero. Fights with the other champions in the division, such as Teofimo Lopez (WBO belt) and Subriel Matias (IBF), are also possible.

But boxing fans are also keen to see Cruz run things back with Gervonta Davis. They faced off in 2021 as Cruz went the distance, earning many plaudits despite his unanimous decision loss. However, Davis revealed he had injured his hand during the fight, leaving question marks over how well Cruz performed. Gibbons has said a Davis rematch could happen in December.

“December is perfect. We’re not chasing Tank now that we have the belt, but everywhere we go, everyone wants to know when we’re fighting Gervonta Davis. He’ll fight. Then Pitbull will fight. And we’ll be ready. He’s ready to fight, and the fans are ready to see him again. The fans have spoken,” Gibbons added
