Islam Makhachev Cinches D’arce Choke To Submit Dustin Poirier At UFC 302

Tonight in Newark, Islam Makhachev has successfully defended his lightweight title with a late submission of Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.

Given the fact that Makhachev entered the evening as a -600 favorite, many were surprised with how competitive Poirier was able to keep the main event bout.

The Russian champion was able to take “The Diamond” to the ground early on, securing back control, forcing Poirier into survival mode for almost the entire first round. How the first round went was obviously concerning if you were in Poirier’s corner, but the Louisianan battled back and had many successful moments on the feet. Even more impressive, Poirier was able to stop many of Makhachev’s takedowns, and by the end of the fourth round momentum had swung his way, and he found himself back in the fight.

Unfortunately for the challenger, the takedown in the 5th round that Makahachev was successfully able to execute, wound up being the one that would ultimately lead to the submission.

Once on the ground, Makhachev found himself in an opportune position and grabbed a hold of a front headlock. From there, the champion was able to roll to his side, compressing Poirier’s chest in the process. He locked in the D’arce choke while moving into top position, and the challenger tapped at 2:42 of the 5th round of an extremely hard fought battle.

The well roundness that Makhachev put on display at UFC 302 proves why he deserves to be the reining champion. Naturally, everyone knew that he would be the better grappler, and would certainly find a way to get his opponent to the ground, but his crisp boxing and well-timed knees showed many that Makhachev can hang with the best in the striking department as well.

With a loss tonight in New Jersey, the public speculation was that Poirier would retire immediately following the bout, but he made it clear in his post fight interview that he is not 100% sure he is finished, but it is a possibility.
