Islam Makhachev Feels Dustin Poirier Does Not Deserve A Shot At His Title, But Still Welcomes The Fight

It seems UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is not going to back down to any fight, even if he feels the competitor does not deserve a shot at the title.

The titleholder is coming off back to back wins over Alexander Volkanovski and has been victorious in his last 13 bouts. But, with not many options for his next opponent, he expressed he is fine to settle for someone who in his mind does not fully deserve a shot at the belt.

One of the names that has been circulating as a possibility for Makhachev is former inter 155-pound champion Dustin Poirier. Just last weekend, Poirier registered a dominant knockout over Benoit Saint-Denis, which is one of the biggest reasons his name is all of a sudden in the mix. Though it is important to keep in mind that this victory is a bounce back performance for Poirier, following the violent head kick that ended his night earlier last year versus Justin Gaethje.

“I know Dustin does not deserve the title fight, but we don’t have any option right now,” Makhachev said. “Everybody is busy. I want to fight. I want to fight three times this year. I have to call out someone, and Poirier is free now. He showed an excellent performance and scored a beautiful knockout. He’s free now, he’s healthy, and I asked him to fight in June.”

While there are other names being mentioned, such as Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Arman Tsarukyan, Makhachev says that Poirier is the best option that will be ready to go for the timeline he has in mind.

“No one (else) is going to be ready,” Makhachev said. “Maybe someone will be ready, but I have to fight. I don’t care. I am healthy now, I am training every day, and I need someone.

“He’s beat a lot of top guys. He’s a legend. A fight with him, it’s going to be good for me – for the history, for everything. He’s a legend. He beat a lot of tough guys. He’s a tough opponent, too. He have a good guillotine.”

Makhachev clearly meant no offense to Poirier with his statements though, as he followed things up with praise for the longtime UFC contender.
