Islam Makhachev Predicts How He Will Finish Dustin Poirier At UFC 302

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has been quite outspoken in his thoughts about his upcoming opponent, Dustin Poirier, and now he has even detailed what he has planned for the fight.

UFC 302 is set to go down June 1st from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. In the main event, Poirier will take what is likely to be his final shot at a UFC title versus Makhachev, and in the eyes of many this will be a steep uphill battle for the native of Lafitte, Louisiana.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, the 155-pound UFC titleholder took his confident remarks even further than usual, and predicted how things will come to a close in the headlining bout.

“We will start and I will try to take him down,” Makhachev told Yahoo Sports. “He will try to get me in a guillotine [choke]. I will defend the guillotine. I will give him a couple punches. He will give his back. Then I will finish.”

“One day maybe, I hope [Poirier] will finish his guillotine on someone,” Makhachev said, that sly smile creeping in again. “But it’s not going to be me.”

“I have some job in this division,” Makhachev said. “I don’t want to give some chance to people from the other division, I already gave Volkanovski two chances. Now I need my chance for a second belt. In my division I think, honestly, I have Dustin and then Arman and then I’m done. We don’t have some new opponent who deserves a title fight. Then I will be ready to fight the champion at 170 [pounds].”

Regardless of many viewing Makhachev as the favorite over “The Diamond”, Poirier should not be counted out. Even when he challenged the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, lifelong training partner of Makhachev, he displayed moments of success that many had not found versus the dominant former lightweight champion until that point.
