Jorge Masvidal Discusses A UFC Comeback To Compete For Justin Gaethje’s BMF Title

Former welterweight challenger Jorge Masvidal seems to be interested in returning to the UFC to reclaim the BMF title.

Masvidal stepped into retirement following his most recent loss to Gilbert Burns back in April at UFC 287. This was preceded by a decision loss to rival Colby Covington and a knockout defeat to Kamaru Usman in his most recent shot at the 170-pound title.

Justin Gaethje, the current holder of the BMF title, defeated Dustin Poirier last year to achieve the belt, now he is scheduled to defend it against Max Holloway at UFC 300. If he retains the title, it seems that Masvidal is very interested in a future matchup with Gaethje, as revealed in a recent interview with LowKick MMA.

“When I won the belt, Dana said it would be one of one.” Jorge Masvidal stated in a recent interview with Lowkick MMA discussing plans for his return. “The belt would be done, there would be no defending of it. So there was no talk about it, at least for me. But I think now, the temperature on that theme has changed you know? Now it’s a little different, they’re doing things a little different.”

He continued, “Justin’s very good, the dude he beat to get that belt is a stud, a f*cking killer in Dustin Poirier. But, I just feel like if you put BMF against BMF, you put me against [Justin] Gaethje in there, I will break his eye orbital and I will f*cking chop him up, man. So hopefully that can happen at some point.”

While acknowledging the skill that it took for Gaethje to defeat Poirier for the BMF title, Masvidal still feels quite confident that he has a solid chance at victory, despite his time away from Octagon.

“The Highlight” lived up to his name when he connected with a perfectly timed head kick on Poirier at UFC 291 in July, dropping and finishing his opponent in the second round. This victory came while Gaethje was still riding the high from his strong majority decision over Rafael Fiziev.

Meanwhile, Masvidal has not found victory in MMA since defeating Nate Diaz in the original BMF title match back in 2019, and seems much more focused on the promotion of his organization “Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA“. The former UFC star is even in talks for a throwback boxing match with Diaz, but at this time nothing has been confirmed.
