Kenny Florian Disapproves Of Volkanovski Having Zuckerberg In His Corner For UFC Title Bout

Kenny Florian has blasted Alexander Volkanovski for having Mark Zuckerberg in his corner for his world title fight with Ilia Topuria at UFC 298.

Volkanovski’s four-year reign as a UFC Featherweight Champion ended with a second-round stoppage loss. That was Volkanovski’s second loss in a row, and first ever at featherweight, after being knocked out by Islam Makhachev in a lightweight title fight at UFC 294 last year. The 35-year-old has lost his aura of invincibility, leading Florian to question the Australian’s mindset.

Volkanovski had been helping Zuckerberg train for a potential MMA fight with Elon Musk. That fight never got made, but Zuckerberg somehow found himself in Volkanovski’s corner on fight night. In a fight of such magnitude against an unbeaten contender, Florian could not understand Volkanovski’s thinking as Zuckerberg walked him out.

“Volkanovski went in there with the mindset of saying, ‘Yeah, this guy is undefeated, but look what I have done, I’m gonna go out there and teach this kid a lesson. I don’t think that has everything to do with why he lost, I don’t think that’s the sole reason. However, it certainly plays a part. When you are going to battle, you have to take it extremely serious. Be ready for war.

“That’s the kind of mindset you need to have for a championship fight in the UFC… For me, I just didn’t like the look, when Volkanovski came out there, he just seemed a little bit too relaxed for my liking. Even the fact of, like, having Zuckerberg there. We’re kind of joking about it in the chat, but man. Why do you have something that could be some kind of a distraction for a world championship fight against a killer like Ilia Topuria? Why would you do that?” Florian stated

Volkanovski has called for a rematch, expressing his desire to fight Topuria in Spain. “The Great” was one of the more active champions in recent years, fighting in seven title fights in the last 29 months. If the Australian wants to become a champion again, some rest is in order following consecutive knockout defeats.
